Pines

$5.00

Inspired by the forests flanking the mountains as seen from my kitchen window, Pines uses cables to evoke a pine tree. A doubled brim keeps your ears gloriously warm. Instructions for a single brim are included if that is your preference. The ribbing on the brim flows into traveling cables that move aside to allow space for the pine tree’s branches to grow. The cabled trunks lead into the crown with final shaping that mimics the crossing of the cables. The instructions for the body of the hat are entirely charted.

SIZES

Adult (small, large)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Circumference: (18.75, 22.5) inches / (47.5, 119) cm

Height: (9, 10.5) inches / (23, 26.5) cm

YARN

(200, 280) yards / (183, 256) meters worsted weight yarn.

Note: Yardage calculation was made for the doubled brim option. The single brim will require slightly less yarn, but I’m not sure how much less.

NEEDLES
One 32 inch (80cm) US size 7 (4.5 mm) (or size needed to obtain gauge), and two 32 inch (80cm) US size 5 (3.75 mm) (or two sizes smaller than gauge needle) circular knitting needles.

NOTIONS
(5, 6) stitch markers, cable needle (or DPN), and a tapestry needle.

GAUGE
20 stitches and 28 RNDS = 4 inches / 10 cm in stockinette US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles.

One repeat of the cable pattern measures 3.75 inches / 9.5 cm on US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles.

SKILL LEVEL

Intermediate

Work provisional cast on or tubular cast on, work in the round, work cables, read a cable chart, decrease (ssk, k2tog, ssp, p2tog)
